This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
~ Ephesians 4:17-32 ~
If we want to escape from futility in the practical affairs and relationships of our daily lives, we have to first of all become deep peopleāpeople who look deeply within ourselves for the cause of our futility, and who don’t settle for quick fixes and superficial, upbeat attitude changes. We don’t want the surgeon to keep back anything! Tell us everything you found, God! We want to be healed. We want to be free from the very root of futility.
~ John Piper – Escape from Futility September 7, 1986 ~
It was quite a while before I came to painfully realize that my Christian faith required a deep self-examination. A faith where change needed to occur. Such a faith could be applied to all of my issues. Now that I have experienced a genuine spiritual awakening through Jesus Christ I am able to use my faith to help me through every day life. My life seems to move from one miracle to another. I know the joy of beginning each day expectantly, confident that it will hold good things for me. And if a crisis arises, or any problem baffles me, I hold it up to the light of truth who is Jesus Christ. By holding such issues up to the light of truth I am able to extract its sting before it may cause any hurt.
When I am strengthened by the faith and grace of God, I find that I am able to look at things in their proper perspective. I don’t let my past get too close, lest it take on fearsome proportions that do not reflect my true character. I pray to accept, with a peaceful mind, the things I know are out of my control. Things I have no power to change. Knowing it is futile to be obstinate about the inevitable. I pray to be resolute to take decisive action in things that I know must need changing. Things that stifle my true character in Jesus Christ.
Living out these daily spiritual truths help guide me on my spiritual journey. They help me grow in my faith and grace God has afforded me. Through mindful Christian living I am aware of God’s active presence and involvement in my everyday life.
TODAY’S PRAYER AND MEDITATION
Heavenly Father, today I call upon you to guide me in recognizing those things within me that I need to work on changing. Grant me the wisdom and courage to bring them to light and release them. Assist me as I walk daily in faith and grace knowing that I am still growing in spirit and truth. Where I fall short, grant me the courage and willingness to confess my faults and strengthen me through thy love. In Jesus Name, Amen.
