He Strengthens Us in Our Sufferings

Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
~ Job 13:15, KJV ~

According to Alma, Jesus was to suffer pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind. Further, he suggests that all of this suffering on the part of Christ was for one purpose—that he could be filled with mercy, knowing fully how to succor and care for us in our infirmities. (Alma 7:12.)

When in the throes of suffering overwhelmed me, I did not really know which direction to take. Decisions I made were haste and without thought. More reactive out of sheer desperation rather than responsive to the situation. Always seeking to be rescued – even by God. Despite the fact I had convinced myself on numerous occasions that I had faith in God. Instead, I came to resent my Heavenly Father and rejected any true humble need to fully submit my life and will over to His divine care. This appeared to worsen my situations and exacerbated my sufferings all the more. I had come to the realization that I am just going to have to go it alone.

Fortunately, our Heavenly Father is full of truth, grace, and mercy. I eventually turned to Him in full humility, contrition, and seeking forgiveness and fully committed my life and my will over to His divine care. This act of surrender brought greater sense of peace into my heart, mind, and spirit. Through this act of humble contrition, total surrendering of my life into His hands, and faithfully trusting in His divine providence resulted in my personal journey through my suffering.

We are called to be of good cheer – even in the throes of our suffering where Christ strengthens us daily.

Our Heavenly Father strengthens us through Jesus Christ when we face our moments of sufferings. Our burdens become lighter to bear. He does not take the suffering away from us. He lifts us where we are, walks with us through the midst of the storm, and reminds us of how important it is to trust and have faith in Him. Not in our own strengths and understanding.

When we trust in our own strength, understanding, and will to make it through our suffering – we may inevitably become lost, hurt, betrayed, bitter, and resentful. This leads to us being separated from God’s divine love and grace. Through the Gift of Faith that is offered through Jesus Christ, accepting this offer, we need to put aside our own will and desire. Surrendering to God’s will and trusting in Him to strengthen us and walk with us through our struggles is where we find peace that surpasses all understanding.

Today’s Prayer and Meditation

Heavenly Father, your word says for me to trust in you with all my heart and not to lean unto my own understanding. I commit myself over to your will and acknowledge the truth that through my faith in your son, Jesus Christ, you will guide and direct my path. I pray this in Christ’s name, Amen
