We must choose to live with a focus on God. We must daily remind ourselves that compared to knowing him and fighting at his side, nothing else matters. We must live as the warriors God created us to be.
Perkins, B. (2011). Six battles every man must win: . . . and the ancient secrets you’ll need to succeed. Tyndale House Publishers.
True and authentic recovery from substance use, pornography, co-dependency, and other debilitating stumbling blocks require us to overcome our spiritual passivity. This is the foundation of all twelve-step programs. Coming to an end of ourselves and realizing we cannot manage our lives. The reliance on something greater than ourselves to help us. And, the reality we come to accept in letting go of our previous notions and surrender ourselves over to that which is greater than ourselves. Within the faith-based and Christian concept, this brings us to the end of ourselves and surrendering over to Christ.
In the Book of Mormon – Mosiah 7:33 – we have this promise:
But if ye will turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, and put your trust in him, and serve him with all diligence of mind, if ye do this, he will, according to his own will and pleasure, deliver you out of bondage.
In another passage in the Book of Mormon – Alma 22:15 – we have an example of what it means for us to surrender all that we have to desire and know God – through Jesus Christ:
And it came to pass that after Aaron had expounded these things unto him, the king said: What shall I do that I may have this eternal life of which thou hast spoken? Yea, what shall I do that I may be born of God, having this wicked spirit rooted out of my breast, and receive his Spirit, that I may be filled with joy, that I may not be cast off at the last day? Behold, said he, I will give up all that I possess, yea, I will forsake my kingdom, that I may receive this great joy.
Jesus Christ himself taught the disciples (and us) that we must:
- Seek after God’s Kingdom first (Matthew 6:33)
- Called to deny our natural way of life and lose it toward living a more spiritual and enriching life through Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:25)
- Take up our cross and follow Christ (Matthew 10:38 and 16:24-26)
Thus, recovery is a spiritual journey one makes to move forward with God to stand and face our giants. Fight our battles, and claim victory. It is how we overcome our spiritual passivity and become spiritual warriors. And, this takes great sacrifice. It requires us to walk in obedience. Submit to God’s divine and sovereign authority.
