Let our speech be seasoned with Grace and Salt

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

~ Colossians 4:6, ESV ~

What does it mean for our speech to be seasoned with grace and salt? How we speak toward self and others makes an impact. To season our speech with grace and salt, we are removing anything that may stain ours, or another’s, character, promoting intimacy and wellness, and eliminating any foulness that may emanate from us. Our words express tolerance, kindness, and gratitude.

Being mindfully tolerant means we are extending grace toward others, despite their own personal character flaws and weaknesses. We remove ourselves from fault-finding and give others an allowance of patience and love. Recognizing that we are better off not being quick to judge.

Our conversations are designed to build up one another. Not to slander or speak out of malice and anger (see, Ephesians 4:29-32). Bitterness causes resentment and this leads to strife and division.

And, in all things, we give thanks. Showing gratitude goes much further than mere complaining. By being mindful of how we speak, includes monitoring our own thoughts and ensure we are not engaged in grumblings or murmurings. We are called to be better than this.
