A Rare Possession

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

~ Romans 1:16, ESV ~

Denzel Washington plays a blind character in a dystopian world. With him, is a book he reads through. Later, we find that this book is a very rare possession. The only surviving copy is one that is in braille. With the help of a young woman, Washington’s character makes it to the former prison island of Alcatraz where he recites the words, stories, and teachings from memory. This book is the Holy Bible.

A.W. Tozer writes on the importance and purpose of Holy Writ: “The purpose of the Bible is to bring men to Christ, to make them holy and prepare them for heaven. In this it is unique among the books, and it always fulfills its purpose.” For us in recovery, the Bible is a rare possession in helping us find our way back to the path of righteousness (or right way of living).

As we commit to the spiritual discipline of reading from the words of Holy Writ, we are blessed immensely with God’s wisdom and guidance. Through it, we are able to receive personal revelation in our own lives.

Proverbs 13:13

Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself,
but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.
